The Art of Vanishing: "Living Moss" Aesthetics of the Chahoua Gecko

The Mossy Gecko

Mossy Spirit of the Rainforest: Chahoua Gecko

They don't look like pets, but rather like a patch of ancient lichen deep in the forest. Mniarogekko chahoua, with its perfect camouflage and soulful eyes, is hailed as the most spiritual presence in the New Caledonian archipelago.

Little Secrets about Mniarogekko chahoua

🥚 "Hard-Shelled Egg" Producer

This is the biggest physiological difference between Chahouas, Cresties, and Gargoyles! The eggs they lay are highly calcified hard-shelled eggs. This means the mother's demand for calcium during the breeding season is extremely high—several times that of other geckos.

🦎 The Tail is Regenerable!

While Crested Geckos become "frog butts" after dropping their tails, Chahoua Geckos possess full regenerative capabilities. Their tails are extremely strong, known as "Prehensile tails," and can wrap around branches like a fifth hand to support their entire body weight.

🌿 The Name Means "Moss"

The genus name Mniarogekko comes from Greek, meaning "Moss Gecko." Their skin feels loose, and their patterns interweave red, green, and white. When lying on lichen-covered bark, they achieve nearly 98% invisibility—masters of hide-and-seek.

Why Do People Love Them?

Hailed as the "Hidden Gem" among New Caledonian geckos.

1 High Intelligence & Interaction

Many keepers consider Chahouas to be the smartest and most soulful of their genus. They are very alert to their surroundings with expressive eyes. After interaction, they exhibit puppy-like begging behavior and even recognize their owners, offering excellent engagement.

2 Extreme Appetite (Foodie)

They are famous "Gluttons"! They refuse neither insects nor fruit mix, often showing a strong feeding drive. Watching them gobble down food is very therapeutic, but because they love eating so much, keepers must be careful not to get their fingers bitten if they smell like fruit mix.

3 Dreamy "Pine Isle" Coloration

Chahoua Geckos are mainly divided into Mainland (Grand Terre) and Pine Island locales. The Pine Island variety often features vivid pink, brick red, or white mossy patterns. This dream-like palette is one of the reasons collectors adore them.

4 Velvety Texture

Unlike the roughness of Gargoyles or the spikiness of Cresties, Chahoua skin is looser with a velvety feel. When they wrap their strong prehensile tails around your hand, that soft yet solid touch is truly unique.
