Correlophus ciliatus

Crested Gecko Correlophus ciliatus
The Forest Sprite of New Caledonia

Correlophus ciliatus, known as the Crested Gecko, is native to the rainforests of New Caledonia. Once thought to be extinct, the species was "rediscovered" in 1994 and has since become one of the most beloved reptiles in the hobby. They are characterized by the hair-like projections (cilia) above their eyes, resembling long eyelashes, which run down the sides of their heads. Lacking eyelids, they cannot blink and instead use their long, agile tongues to lick their eyes for moisture and cleaning. Their calm demeanor and velvety skin make them an excellent companion species.
Care & Behavior
- Ideal Temperature: Prefers cooler temps: 22–28°C. Sensitive to heat; requires no intense heating and can stress above 30°C.
- Primary Diet: Omnivorous (Frugivorous); primarily Commercial Gel Diets (CGD) mixed with water, supplemented with calcium-dusted insects.
- Personality Traits: Extremely docile and easy to handle. Can be jumpy when young but generally slow-moving adults.
- Activity Cycle: Nocturnal/Crepuscular; hides in foliage during the day and becomes active at night to forage.
- Habitat Tips: Arboreal species requiring vertical space, plenty of hiding spots, and humidity between 60–80%.

Field Notes
Research indicates that the toe pads of the Crested Gecko contain thousands of microscopic hairs called setae. These interact with surfaces using Van der Waals forces, allowing them to climb smooth vertical glass easily.
A unique trait to note is their tail. While it is prehensile and acts as a "fifth limb" for gripping branches, if dropped due to stress, it will not grow back. This differs from many other geckos. A tailless Crested Gecko (often affectionately called a "frog butt") is perfectly healthy and common in the wild. Watching them dilate their pupils in low light is a fascinating display of their nocturnal adaptation.
